Want some additional orienteering on your own? Thanks to the efforts of Dave Tallent, COC has a new map and a new UsynligO course for members to race on. Dave just finished remapping the two school campuses and the surrounding woods and was pleasantly surprised that the area offered a bona fide orienteering experience with both open and junky forest and a dense network of trails to disorientate one’s self!
Head on out to Madrona K-8 School (9300 236th Street Southwest, Edmonds, WA) with your smart phone charged and the UsynligO app downloaded.
One may use the map anytime school is not in session: After 4:30pm on weekdays, anytime on the weekends and, of course, during the weekdays during summer break.
Courses are posted on UsynligO. When in the app, search for Madrona. The controls are relatively closed together so it may work better to change the control radius from 20 m to 10 m, and set the Minimum GPS accuracy to 200 m. The maps are available in the app or online when you have found the event. If you want to print separate control descriptions, they are here.
Please park at the north end of the main parking area.
Learn more about the UsynligO app and how to use it here.

Coming up this weekend: Northwest Nav Races is pleased to be hosting a 24-hour navigation race in the fantastic channeled scablands terrain of eastern Washington State! PRE-REGISTRTION CLOSES THURSDAY 5/27 AT MIDNIGHT! You can register here. You can learn more here. COC and OUSA members get a discount.
The terrain is generally flat to gently sloping in profile and quite easy to run or walk through, however cliffs, lakes and marshes, and streams provide hindrances to straight-line travel in many parts of the terrain.
The area encompasses the existing Fishtrap Lake orienteering map, as well as lands south of Sprague Lake.
Are you new to nav racing? That’s okay! Check out the “First Time?” section to learn how it works.

Been enjoying COC events these past few months? There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make COC events fair, challenging, enjoyable, smooth, permit compliant, and well-attended, so huge thanks to everyone in our community who has stepped up to volunteer. If you have some time to spare, we are still in need of more volunteers- some in critical roles and some in casual roles. Current open positions include but are not limited to Land Permissions Coordinator, Training Coordinator, and Webmaster. Also COC is always looking for folks willing to learn and become course designers. Series Directors often need role specific help as well. Orienteering knowledge is often helpful but not required.
Time commitment is variable depending on needs and role, estimate 5-20 hours per month. The club is also currently without a Vice President. For more information about a particular role or to volunteer, please contact COC Club President Eric Jones at president@cascadeoc.org
