This year’s Marmot O’ Cup will wrap up the Ultimate Orienteer season (and begin the 2026 Pacific Northwest Orienteering Festival) with two excellent days of orienteering:
This will be preceded by a bonus warmup event (also with excellent courses) at South Quincy Lakes near George. To make the weekend even more special, we’ll be hosting two National Ranking Events (NREs)! Stick around for more orienteering fun, as PNWOF2026 continues in Spokane and Oregon! Sign up for the whole festival or pick your race(s). |
Ultimate Orienteer Series
The two NREs are the final two events in this year’s Ultimate Orienteer Series. If you want to vie for Ultimate points, please note the following exceptions to the standard Ultimate class/course allocations.
- F50+ is assigned to the Brown course. That means if you are between 55 and 59, you must compete in one of the following NRE classes on Brown: F-Brown or Brown Rec.
- O60+ is assigned to the Green course. That means if you are between 65 and 69, you must compete in one of the following NRE classes on Green: M50+, M55+, M60+, M Green, or Green Rec.
Volunteer
These are major events for our club and we will need a lot of volunteers to make them successful. Please take a look at the available positions and consider helping in whatever way you can. Thanks in advance for helping!
Check out general volunteer guidelines.
Sign up directly
If you have a COC registration account, you can sign up directly for a volunteer slot.
- Volunteer Friday, June 12 at South Quincy Lakes

Terrain/Maps
- South Quincy Lakes (1:10,000, 5m contour interval) – Open scablands with few trees and abundant rock features.
- Moses Lake Sand Dunes (1:10,000, 2.5m contour interval, printed at 1:7,500 for all courses) – Subtle contours, open terrain, and few trails provide ample opportunity for parallel errors. Marshes and other water features are abundant at Moses Lake as well, making navigation challenging.
- Fisk State Park (1:4,000, 2.5m contour interval for all courses, tabloid size paper) – Open pine forest with isolated areas of very detailed rock features.
All maps have been used for previous events. You can view courses from previous events on RouteGadget and/or Livelox.
Embargo
To ensure competitive fairness and in accordance with OUSA rules, the race venues are embargoed until the competition, i.e. anyone wishing to be eligible for competitive awards may not enter Moses Lake Sand Dunes or Fisk State Park (except the parking area and entry road) from March 1 until the event.

South Quincy Lakes and Fisk State Park – Washington State Discover Pass Required
There is no on-site purchase option, so be sure you purchase the pass in advance. The Discover Pass is good for all state-operated recreation facilities. If you’re doing the entire Festival, this includes Cheney Wetlands.
You can purchase a Discover Pass ($50 annual (includes $5 processing fee) or $11.50/day (includes $1.50 processing fee)) online or in person at many hunting/fishing license vendors or at several retail locations. Check the Discover Pass website for details.
You can also purchase a Discover Pass at one of the following state facilities ($45 annual or $10/day):
- Riverside State Park, Bowl & Pitcher campground, 4427 N Aubrey L White Parkway, Spokane, WA 99205
- Riverside State Park main office, 9711 W. Charles Road, Nine Mile Falls, WA 99026
Carpooling
We encourage carpooling at all our events.
Timing system
We will use the SPORTident electronic timing and punching system for all events. All competitors are required to use an SI-Card to participate. If you don’t own your own, sign up to rent one when you register. Contactless (Air+) punching will be used for all three events.
Malfunction
If the SI unit fails (you don’t hear a beep or see a flash), use the manual pin punch to punch your map. Before downloading, let the volunteer know what happened.
Start times
All events will have individual pre-assigned start times. Times will be posted on the registration site by Wednesday, June 10 at midnight. Recreational classes for the NREs will start after all competitive participants on that course have started. Exceptions may be made for those who need to coordinate child care or shadowing.
Shadowing
If you are shadowing a junior and also participating in a competitive class, you must run your course first and then shadow. Please ask the registrar for an early start time if you are in this situation.
Awards
- Day 1 (Moses Lake Sand Dunes) NRE Middle distance – 3 deep in age classes; 1st place in other competitive classes
- Day 2 (Fisk State Park) NRE Classic distance – 3 deep in age classes; 1st place in other competitive classes
- Marmot O’ Cup (2-day total time; must participate in both events in the same class) – 1st place in all competitive classes
- Ultimate Series – top 3 in all Ultimate age classes (results are based on best 6 of 9 season events)
PNWOF Awards
Your best 5 of 6 event scores (see qualifying events marked ** above) will be added together to determine your placing in the Festival standings. Awards will be given to first place in each competitive category.
Scoring system
In each competitive class, the fastest competitor earns 1000 points. Other competitors are awarded points using this calculation: points = 1000 x fastest time/competitor’s time.
Child Care
No child care will be provided. However, we will make every effort to accommodate parents who are participating. If you require early, late, or split start times, please request this when you register.
Refund Policy
You may receive a full refund (minus processing fees) if you cancel by May 31. No refunds will be given after this date.

Course Notes
Scale: 1:7,500 White through Green, 1:10,000 Red and Blue
Contour Interval: 2.5m
Welcome to Moses Lake Sand Dunes! Although small (around 1.5 km2), its easy-to-run terrain, detailed sand dunes, and very limited trails make it a lovely orienteering area. It is a challenge to be able to navigate as fast as you can run here.
Start: 2 minute walk from registration/parking. The main parking lot may not handle all the cars, so you might have a bit of a walk along the road to the main parking area.
Finish: There are two different finishes, both a few hundred meters south of the download tent. After punching the finish, walk to the road, then north on the side of the road back to the parking lot. Download at the parking lot. Do not forget to download, so we know that you have finished!
Map Flip: All courses except White will have a map flip. Once you get to the last control on the front side of the map, flip it over and continue on the back side. We will check that you punched all controls in order.
Terrain: This is open sand dune terrain with very few trees, although in most places there is light ground cover that makes the footing plenty firm. Occasional steeper areas can be sandy and trickier to get up and down. The ground cover is easy to run through, but in places has small barbs on it, so full leg cover is recommended. There are no boulders or cliffs. Low areas have marshes and sometimes thick vegetation. The vegetation is generally not shown over the water/marsh symbol, so what looks like bushes may be mapped as a marsh or lake instead. The few single trees are not mapped. I tried to update the vegetation, but it likely is imperfectly mapped in places. You will want to be always paying attention to the contour features, and knowing where you are; otherwise it can be easy to get quite confused. Although there are no extremely large hills, you will be going up and down the smaller dunes much of the time. Note that the contour interval is 2.5m instead of the more usual 5m. The few trails marked as intermittent (double dash) may be difficult to see or follow in places. You may see some game trails or very old trails that are not mapped; they don’t tend to run very far without fading away again.
Water Level: The water level here can change significantly, depending on the weather and the Bureau of Reclamation, so it may not exactly match what is mapped. Ponds, lakes, and marshes may be bigger or smaller than what is mapped. I have set the courses so they should be easily run regardless of the water level.
Road: There is a north-south dirt road running through the entire area. White, Yellow, and Orange will not need to cross the road; other courses will. Although traffic is very sparse, they do tend to drive fast so be alert (orienteering traffic will all be north of the competition area). You will never be more than 300m from the road, so it is an excellent place to relocate if you get lost. If you want to quit or are injured, go to the road, then walk north back to the parking lot.
Fences: There are two fences roughly parallel to the road on both sides. White, Yellow, and Orange will not need to cross the fences; other courses will. The east fence is mostly not barbed and it is easy to cross over or slip between the wires. The west fence is barbed. If you are tall, or you find a low spot, you may be able to step over the top wire carefully. Otherwise, find a high spot and slip under the bottom wire on your back (take off any backpack first). Going through the middle is a recipe for getting cut. Do not damage the fences.
Wildlife: Deer and coyotes are plentiful; they shouldn’t bother you. There are reported to be rattlesnakes, but I have never seen one in several days of course designing. Unlike much of eastern Washington, there is no cattle grazing.
Heat: It can be hot in June, and there is no shade on the course, so plan ahead and don’t get dehydrated.
Water Controls: Courses Orange and above will have at least one water control, but you probably would want to bring your own on the course as well.
Mosquitos: The mosquitos and other insects can be quite heavy, especially west of the road. Repellant and/or arm cover may be useful.

Course Notes
- Please read all the map notes.
- Please accompany young children. The White and Yellow courses are designed to be easy and safe if executed correctly, but one wrong turn can lead to a young person being quite lost in the high cliffs. The area is challenging and can be very confusing. If your child is not an experienced navigator, please make arrangements for shadowing your child.
- The map is at 1:4,000 scale and drawn using ISSprOM symbol set. This allows correct spacing and readability of the features on the map, and should be quite readable. However, this means that there are some subtle differences between this map and a traditional forest map drawn with ISOM standard symbol sizes. Namely, and although it may appear to be the same circle size you expect to see on the paper, the control circle sizes will be 6 mm and represent a 24 m footprint for the circle (as opposed to the usual 75 m for ISOM). Also, the magnetic lines will be spaced 120 m (3 cm) apart as opposed to 300 m (3 cm) apart for a typical 1:10,000-scale map. I’d guess most people will not even notice these two things, but if you train with specifics, you might notice this.
- Expect a map flip on the longer courses. The symbol for a map flip will be on your control description list and will look like this. Also, on your map Page-1, it will simply end at a regular control instead of a double circle. This is your cue to turn over the map and find the “new start” symbol on Page-2. This “new-start” or “re-start” symbol is a circle with a triangle inside of it and will be at the same spot as your last control on Page-1. It will look like this.
- There will be a remote/run-out start. This means that you will follow this sequence:
- Insert ePunch into Start Box to begin time when directed to do so.
- Gather and look at map.
- Follow marked route to the start, which will be indicated by a triangle on the map and a control marker without a punch box at the end of the marked route.
- There will be no box to punch at the start triangle. Continue navigating on your own from this point forward.
- There will be no tape indicating property boundaries that are shown on the map. Avoid going on to obvious private property that surrounds the park.
- Control descriptions will be available at or just after the call-up area.
- There is a high density of controls. Always check your control code number.
- The Blue course has 30 controls. If you have an SI-8 card, then this is the maximum amount of controls your device can register to memory (33 total: 30 dedicated for controls+3 dedicated for Start+Finish+Clear/Check). If you have a SI-8 card only, I recommend borrowing one from COC for this event, otherwise if you inadvertently punch a wrong control, your punch will run out of memory before you finish and that would not be cool for you.
- Course Metrics
Water
Water and cups will be provided at one central location, easily accessible from each course. The location is marked on the map but is NOT at a control.
Time Limit
In accordance with OUSA rules, the time limit for the Classic is 3 hours.
