Lincoln Park is an interesting combination of open, grassy park on a gentle slope, a loose network of wooded trails, and a tight network of really dense trails.

Note: Samples of the map are provided here for educational purposes only; the map shown here is not kept up-to-date. The course shown is a Beginner/Intermediate course, and actual controls do not exist in the terrain.

The purpose of providing these navigational and physical ratings below is to provide greater context for how challenging an orienteering course at this venue might be. For example, an advanced-level course at a local city park will be easier to complete than an advanced-level course in the mountains.

Navigational Challenge Rating: 4

The open areas of the park provide good visibility and easier navigation, while the forested areas host a crazy web of trails that can swallow you up, then spit you out, leaving you wondering how you got there. The key to success at Lincoln Park is slowing down and keeping careful track of where you are in the map whenever you enter one of the ‘mazes’! Note: the most infamous “maze” area of the park is currently out-of-bounds as of November 2016, but there are many other fun areas of the park to explore!

Most of the park resides on a very gentle slope, virtually removing the need to read contours unless you’re headed down to the water!

Physical Challenge Rating: 2

The entire park is on a gentle slope, making this either a very fast or pleasant venue, depending on your pace. However, course setters often cannot resist sending those on the advanced courses down to the water and back up again, which is the only steep journey in the park.
