- About
I have been a member of the Cascade Orienteering Club board of directors for several years, and I have been especially active in the areas of mapping, course setting, and training. I served as WIOL Director several years ago. In 2001, I started Meridian Geographics (MerGeo, for short), a business that provides map and compass events, instruction, and services. MerGeo co-sponsors Street Scramble urban orienteering events with Cascade, as well as producing the BEAST adventure race series, Northwest Trail Runs, and rogaining events.
How I started in orienteering
I started orienteering in WIOL during my sophomore year at Garfield High School, after learning about the sport from one of my science teachers. The next year, my brother and I recruited a bunch of our cross country and chess friends to form a school team, and we called our teammates a few days before each WIOL event to arrange carpools.
I continued orienteering through college at the University of Washington, where I founded the Husky Orienteering & Running Club with Bill Cusworth and won four individual collegiate national titles, as well as helping UW win the national team title.
I also was named to the U.S. Junior and then Senior orienteering teams, and I have represented the U.S. at 11 World Orienteering Championships between 1995 and 2010.
I served the U.S. Orienteering Federation as Vice President for Competition from 1998 to 2003, which included overseeing rules, event sanctioning, and national teams.
Personal
I was born in Seattle and have lived here all my life. I currently live in the Ravenna neighborhood with my partner, Terry Farrah and our wonderful house mates. Most of my family members live in Seattle or nearby, and I enjoy spending time with them, as well as with my mom's family and Terry's family in the San Francisco area. When I'm not working or orienteering, I enjoy eating, sleeping, exercising and exploring outdoors, following the news, and making time to help people outside my immediate circle.
