PT. DEFIANCE MEET CANCELED!

We had about 70% of the info needed to make this decision yesterday, but needed to explore every opportunity to eliminate the logistical and safety obstacles.

In the end, the park is still closed to traffic, falling trees at Pt Defiance were on last night's TV news, there's a windstorm coming to Tacoma tonight affecting more icy trees, school districts are closed with no transportation, at least 5-7 schools can't make the meet, our meet director is snowed in and our course setter also has limited availability. So yes, we're finally pulling the plug.

Thanks, AJ Ritter, for all the time you put into course-setting for this almost-meet.

Next event is Feb 4 at Green River Community College.

Orienteering Course Design class coming in January!

If you've ever wanted to learn how to design orienteering coursesthat are, interesting, and challenging and that people will talk about afterwards, now is your chance!

COC member and über course designer Dave Tallent will teach Orienteering Course Design on January 8, 2012. In a combination of in-class presentations and field exercises, you will learn the basic principles of good course design, including:

Preregister Online for the North SeaTac Meet

It's a simple fact. Rapid data entry outdoors from scrawled registrations leads to input error, which is frustrating for everyone. Don't be this person. Preregister online before the 7 PM Thursday deadline. (You'll still pay at the meet, but you'll be in the fast line with no paperwork to fill out!)

Time to Sign Up for MoboGoGlobo!

MoboGoGlobo! is two things. First, it's a great way to connect with others through orienteering, wherever they are in the world; they navigate and you run for them, following directions by cell phone. If you're both local, you can even alternate roles, with each of you doing one loop. Or, you can pick one of the global participants and run for that person, building a new friendship during the course.

Back, by popular demand! Cascade Orienteering Club is now taking orders through January 22nd for our club jerseys and pants, which feature our bold competition design! (click ''read more' to get to the online ordering steps)

Free Hot Lunch and WIOL Booster Training

Maybe you're new to the WIOL youth orienteering league. Or you participated last year and had trouble on some courses. Whatever your reason for wanting a boost, this is the place to make it happen. This year's Pre-WIOL training on Oct 16 gives you hands-on experience with maps before the season. You also get tips from our top youth orienteers in a three-hour session with a hot lunch. [Update: This season's morning and afternoon sessions are now both full. But all WIOL meets have a volunteer dedicated to beginner instruction, which can help you get up and running...]

Junior orienteering league registation starts now

The 2010/2011 season of the Washington Interscholastic Orienteering League (WIOL) is now open for registration. This series of seven meets in a "best four" scoring format brings together individual students and school teams of students from across the Puget Sound region to compete in solo navigation in local parks and natural areas.

For more information about WIOL, see the WIOL Introduction page about how to sign up for this season, or the WIOL Results site for year-by-year school team and individual results. Does your school have an orienteering team yet?

96 Members Share Their Views

The membership survey results are in, with 96 people participating. Thanks for taking your time! If "average" is defined as more than 50% of all respondents, here's what we heard... (Click Read More to see the full summary).

The average survey respondents are 35-64 years old, and have been orienteering more than four years, after finding out about orienteering by word-of-mouth or a class. Now they participate more than 8 times/year for the physical and mental challenge, and have joined COC because of the discounts and a desire to support the club. They read the Yahoo newsgroup frequently, and like the new website a lot, but don’t read the newsletter very often and aren’t fond of the PDF format for reading news.
